ARCADIA is a mountainous area in the Greek Peloponnesus under Spartan domination and an area known for its mercenaries. The capitol of Arcadia will become the ancient Megalopolis, to be rediscovered about 370 BCE by Epaminondas. It is at Arcadia, the centre of so much mythology, that the goddess Demeter changed into a mare and was pursued by the god Poseidon.
